How to multiply two-digit numbers in columns
The written method records the distributive property in a compact layout. Multiplying 34 by 26 means finding 34 × 6 and 34 × 20, then adding those two partial products.

Recognize the problem first
- Align ones under ones and tens under tens before calculating.
- Multiply by the bottom ones digit first, regrouping when needed.
- The second partial product is tens, so its place value begins in the tens column.
