Regrouping
Where do regrouped digits go in multiplication?
When a product is greater than 9, write its ones digit in the current column and regroup the remaining tens into the next column to the left. Keep each small regrouped digit directly above the place where it will be added.

Recognize the problem first
- Start in the ones column and move left.
- Write the ones digit of each product on the answer line.
- Record the remaining tens above the next column, then add them after multiplying that column.

Work through one complete example
Question
Calculate 47 × 6 using regrouping.
- Ones: 7 × 6 = 42. Write 2 ones and regroup 4 tens.
- Tens: 4 tens × 6 = 24 tens; add the regrouped 4 tens to make 28 tens.
- The 28 tens are 280. Combine them with the 2 ones to get 282.
Answer47 × 6 = 282.

Common mistakes to catch
- Writing 42 in full under the ones column.
- Forgetting to add the regrouped 4 after multiplying the tens.
- Placing the regrouped digit over the column already completed.
